A few weeks back in Butterbury and in the guest castle, I already feel at home. Sadly, I cannot say the same is true for Cassian. He seems restless, unrooted.

Early one morning, as I toss off the covers in the stone cottage with a thatched roof, I half expect if I throw open the windows little cartoon birds will flutter in and warble as they help me get ready for the day. In this fairytale fantasy, all the woodland critters would befriend me and reveal how to unlock the cage around the prince’s heart.

In this scenario, I’m the princess and, you got it, Cassian is the prince.

See, the thing is, a few weeks ago when I said to him, “Cassian, I have fallen. That’s the problem.” I meant that I’ve fallen for him.

That day, when I was hanging from the chandelier, I was afraid that if I dropped into his arms, I’d never want to let go. I’d cling to him like a koala. Side note: I was trying to clean the glass and kicked the chair away by accident.

I’m not sure what I feel is love, but it’s definitely whatever happens after like. It’s post-crush yet pre-profession of the I’d like to spend the rest of my life with you period.

I’ve tried everything to coax Cassian out of his shell, from tormenting him with the maid’s uniform to boldly speaking my mind. Well, except for going so far as to actually tell him how I feel.

Yes, that would be the mature, adult thing to do, but I recognize that Cassian isn’t a mature adult when it comes to his feelings. I’m not saying he’s a video game-playing infant—I’ve dated a couple of those. Rather, he’s guarding something, but by doing so he’s also blocking the potential for connection, relationships, and something long-lasting.

I know, I know, I’m getting ahead of myself. But I’ve studied animals, the dead, and the living. Obviously, the second two provided quite a contrast, but they also gave me insight into human nature. I quickly learned the difference between wants and needs as well as the wounds people scratch at, preventing them from healing and moving on.

I’m not perfect by any stretch, but sometimes it’s easier to see other people’s problems better than my own. In Cassian’s case, I think the wound he carries is a familiar kind of pain that he’s reluctant to let go of out of fear that an unfamiliar pain might replace it.

But instead of telling him this, I curl my hair, paint my lips a bold pink, and add a bracelet with little red hearts to the charm bracelet around my wrist.

It’s February. That means it’s love month, and I am here to free Cassian’s heart even if I have to work overtime to dust away those cobwebs, knock the rust off, and dance my way into his arms.

Every morning, when I walk over to the castle, I pass the rear terrace, which would be a deck if this was in any way a normal house as Cassian calls it, to avoid the critter he claims lives underneath.
